I think that Frederic Chopin is still my favorite composer, because of my love for piano, and because his music is so awesome but it's a close race between him and Maurice Ravel <3 I've also been listening to a lot of Mendelssohn, Schubert and Mozart lately love J.S. Bach, Handel, and especially Vivaldi when it comes to baroque in 20th century, can't forget Sergei Prokofiev and Charles Ives does anyone even listen to classical anymore?

I don't listen to classical consistently, but I do love it. Well, maybe not as much as you guys. I would say I like orchestral though, nothing with opera though... I like modern composers like Williams and Giacchino, and Cravis for some reason. My favorite old time composer is Mendelssohn, because I got a CD of his as a kid and that was one of my only CDs, I listened to it so much. I have Mendelssohn songs on my mp3 player, but I usually only listen to them when they come up on shuffle.

Russians composers are the name of the game. Sure I love many others, but people like Glazunov, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov... they're dearest to my heart.

Baroque music is broke. I've played for 26 years now and still have no appreciation for the baroque period. It's become something of a running joke between the hubs and I.

So I've been working on a degree in music theory for, like, a million years, and my wife is also in the biz, so I'm pretty invested in Classical music. When I was in high school I primarily listened to "alternative rock," and in college I was more accomplished as a jazz double bassist. But over time I've definitely gravitated to music that is composed out on paper. That's my "desert island" stuff. My two dominant composers are J.S. Bach and Stravinsky but I like a lot of things. I actually have a half-assed blog called One Piece Per Week which intended to introduce 100 great works one week at a time. I've kind of dropped it for the time being, though.

that's a cool idea milltone (about the 100 great works one week at a time)
also totally awesome that you are studying music theory
I wish I knew more about it than I do..
and I, too, love Bach and Stravinsky <3

My two Desert Island discs would be the Dvořák Slavonic Dances and/or a nice selection of Grieg Lyric Pieces. They're probably my faves (I'm a bleeding heart romantic aight!?) I LOVE Shostakovich too, but the Babi Yar symphony just isn't desert island material, as much as I love it, ya know?
Too many others to name!

I'm going to weigh in with Chopin as well. I'm a classically trained pianist and I adore playing Chopin pieces. My husband was the principal bassist for the civic symphony and chamber orchestras for 5+ years. We're up to our eyeballs in classical music.
