check out any given Mendelssohn string quartet
the later Beethoven quartets <3
Schubert, Mozart, and of course the presumed father of the quartet, Haydn
Villa-Lobos had some good ones too

For some composers I like a "period" string quartet like Salomon. Like for HAYDN.
For other composers I like a "modern" string quartet like Tokyo. Like for BEETHOVEN.
String quartets and vocal music are probably the two categories that are most fragile in performance, easily ruined by a player you just don't like. I've definitely heard more string quartets that I didn't like than those that I do.
Oh and for noise-sculptin' modernism these days the JACK quartet rules. Sooo good.
